Unfortunately, most drivers in the New York City area will be in at least one car accident during their driving career. Most of the time these accidents are just minor fender benders. But occasionally a more serious accident occurs that changes a victim’s life forever. If a person has been involved in a car accident, they should keep in mind the following of what steps they should take.

Remain at the scene and ensure safety

It is important that a person who was in a car accident remain at the scene. If anyone is injured, call the police for help and tell them you need medical assistance. If a person believes that someone is under the influence of drugs or alcohol the caller should alert the police to that as well. Call the police for any accident as insurance companies often require a police report of the accident.

Ask questions

Obtain the contact information of everyone involved in the accident. This includes names, addresses, and phone numbers. Try and get information from all drivers, passengers, and witnesses. A car accident victim may also want to take notes about the accident scene, other vehicles involved, insurance status on all involved vehicles, names and badge numbers of responding police officers.

Document accident

It can be important to take as many pictures as possible of the accident scene. Take pictures of all damage to all vehicles, license plates, street signs, lights, skid marks, etc.

Contact attorney

If a person has been involved in a car accident, they may want to contact an attorney who specializes in personal injury. An attorney understands that their client may be facing not only an emotionally traumatic experience but also unexpected financial trauma. An attorney can help their client recover damages for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
